Robotic solution – loading pizza cases into boxes with suction cup grippers

Why are robots so popular in food automation?

The short answer is that the robotization of production processes provides a high degree of flexibility that allows food producers to adapt to changes in demand.
The dynamic nature of the modern food market requires manufacturing flexibility as never before. It is when robotic solutions come into play and enable producers to respond quickly to any changes. For example, reconfiguration of the platform provides handling of various packaging tasks without retooling or retraining workers.

The Case

Robotic loading of pizza cases into boxes

This solution is developed and installed by engineers from T.O.P Inc.

The company specializes in developing innovative and cost-efficient solutions that help food producers reduce costs, improve product quality, and significantly shorten time to market. One of the core advantages of T.O.P inc solutions lies in the synergy of processing equipment and industrial robotics.

The solution consists of two lines equipped with five robots each, where four robots are integrated to perform loading into boxes and one to stack boxes on the pallet at the end of the line.

The advanced sorter conveyor feeds the robots with an equal amount of pizza cases that need to be loaded into boxes with 12 units per box. Once the box is complete, the conveyor transports it to the palletizing station, where it is palletized six boxes per row and seven rows per pallet.

The operational capacity of the loading-into-boxes application (eight robots) is 240 pizza cases per minute, which equals 20 complete boxes. The approximate performance of the given robotics configuration for 7 hours shift is 100,800 pizza cases or 8,400 boxes.

Currently, the platform operates in three shifts (20 hours) and packs 288,000 pizza cases, which equals 24,000 boxes or 572 pallets in one working day.

In addition, the solution easily adapts to loading configurations for different types of cases and boxes.

The Gripper Tool

Gripper head with 6 suction cups

The gripper tool is a configuration of several elements, such as ST-suction cups, vacuum ejectors, connectors, vacuum hoses, and a spatula. It has a pair of suction cups on both sides of the gripper tool that are mounted vertically and parallel to each other. Another set of cups is placed horizontally right at the center of the gripper head. This arrangement makes the gripper versatile, which means the ability to handle boxes of different sizes.

The ellipse shape of the cup ensures good stability in lateral movement and gives a greater load capacity in contrast to round suction cups. The internal design of the suction cups enables high-speed application while maintaining its “pull off/on” easy-change feature.
